Purificacion (Layon) Bernacki
Purificacion, lovingly known by all as "Puring" was born on June 30, 1932 in Dinalupihan, Bataan in the Philippines, one of ten children of the late Victoriano M. and Teodora E. (Sandoval) Layon.She immigrated to the United States in 1978 with her sister Encarnacion, originally settling in Hyde Park before finding a home in Saugus.Puring began working as a seamstress for the bridal shop, House of Bianchi in Boston, but later found a more permanent home in the laundry and linen department for Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center where she worked for 21 years.After many years in the laundry dept., she then worked in Environmental Services at Beth Israel.
Puring was a life member of the Filipino American Association of New England Inc. (PAMAS), the Philippine Dance Company of Boston (PDCO), and AARP.
Puring was the wife of the late Frank Bernacki. Cherished sister of Resty Layon of CA, Encarnacion "Karen" Bernaldo of Saugus, Armando Layon of Billerica, Noe Layon of FL, Alfredo Layon of Wilmington, Melchor Layon of Brockton, and the late Modesto Layon, Daniel Layon and Leonardo Layon. Also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Puring's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, June 14 from 2-6 PM, and again on Monday at 10AM before leaving in procession to Blessed Sacrament Church, 14 Summer St., Saugus for her Funeral Mass celebrated at 11AM. Interment in Riverside Cemetery, Saugus.
