Raymond F. Driscoll
Raymond was born on May 21, 1947 in Boston, one of five children of the late Raymond F. Driscoll and Barbara (King) Driscoll. Raised in the same house he raised his own children, Ray was a Melrose High School graduate and a longtime Melrosian. After graduating from high school, Ray enlisted in the United States Army in 1966 and would serve his country honorably until his discharge in 1995.He served during the Vietnam War, worked in the Pentagon on logistics during Desert Storm, and remained loyal for many years in the US Army Reserves. Ray graduated from Boston State College in 1981, and also worked diligently for UPS for 24 years.
At the young age of 46, Ray suffered a stroke and his life was changed, but not ended. Through sheer determination and his inner strength, Ray persevered. He dedicated himself to his rehabilitation, exceeded expectations, and was honored to be a spokesperson for the American Stroke Association. Ray was a goal oriented man, and never met a challenge he could not overcome.
Through his work with the American Stroke Association, he travelled across the country and world to inspire others with his story of perseverance. He visited the Caribbean many times, Ireland, Australia, Bangkok, and Tahiti.He walked the Disney Marathon, Boston Marathon, and travelled to Hawaii for the Kona Marathon 3 times on behalf of the American Heart & Stroke Association. He even got to know New England Patriot Teddy Bruschi through their mutual work with the organization. Ray also volunteered his time to support others at New England Rehabilitation Hospital in Woburn.
A sports fan from an early age, Ray enjoyed playing racquetball and squash, and coached Melrose youth hockey. He was a season ticket holder of the New England Patriots, and loved tailgating at games.He was also a member of the VFW Post #2394 in Melrose and the Melrose Elks Club #1031.
Above all else, Ray was a family man who cherished time spent together, especially with his two adored grandchildren.
Ray was the beloved husband of Regina "Gina" (Doucette) Driscoll with whom he shared 44 years of marriage. Devoted father of Daniel P. Driscoll of Santa Cruz, CA and Colleen P. Hallisey and her husband Shawn of Woburn. Dear brother of Barbara Mink of Alpena, MI, Roberta Downey of Melrose, Marie Frash of Noblesville, IN, and the late Francis "Dino" Driscoll. Cherished grandfather of Logan and Parker Hallisey. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Ray's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Tuesday, December 2 from 4-8pm, and again on Wednesday morning at 9am before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10am.
