Mr. Richard E. "Dick" Abbott, Sr. a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Monday, January 3, 2011 at home surrounded by his loving family.He was 82 years of age.

Richard was born on June 4, 1928 in Biddeford, Maine, son of the late Raymond H. Abbott and Emily L. (Waterhouse) Abbott.

Mr. Abbott was raised and educated in Somerville.He proudly served in the United States Navy during the Korean War.Richard or "Dick" as he was well known, worked for over 30 years as a custodian for the Melrose Public Schools.An avid walker, he enjoyed taking long walks all over Melrose.He also enjoyed watching the New England Patriots, frequenting Ernie's Lunch on Franklin Street, and above all else, loved spending time with his beloved grandchildren.

Dick was the beloved husband of Lois V. (Sentner) Abbott with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.Devoted father of Gail Swanson and her husband Daniel of Saugus, Rick E. Abbott Jr. and his wife Maureen of Andover, and Cheryl D. Abbott-Shalvey and her husband Eugene Shalvey of Quincy.Loving grandfather of Amanda Wrinn, Marissa Swanson, Nathan Abbott, Emily Abbott, Patrick Shalvey, Steven Shalvey, and Kristin Shalvey.He also leaves a cherished great granddaughter, Emma Grace Wrinn.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Visiting Hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, January 5 from 4:00 - 8:00 PM.Services and interment will be private.
