Richard P. Finn, Ph.D., a longtime resident of Melrose passed away on Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at the Golden Living Center in Melrose after a period of declining health.He was 80 years of age. Dr. Finn was born August 6, 1929 a son of the late Arthur W. Finn and Lena C. (Maccini) Finn.Richard was born on Joy Street in the Beacon Hill section of Boston and moved to Arlington at the age of 5 where he lived with his grandparents. He graduated from Arlington High School, class of 1945 and attended Northeastern University where he began majoring in Business until the US Army Medical Corp called him into service during the Korean War.In 1956, he received his Bachelor's degree from Boston University majoring in English.Richard began his career in education as an English teacher at Mount Everett Regional High School in Sheffield, MA and Bedford High School. He received his Master's degree in Education from Boston University in 1963 and his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Boston College in 1970.Dr. Finn worked for many years as a Professor of English at Northeastern University and Professor of Teachers Education at Boston State College and UMass Boston until his retirement in 1999.His extensive academic career included authoring and publishing several educational textbooks.Dr. Finn was a longtime member of the Melrose Senior Chorus, Vice President of Melrose Chapter 1125 AARP and active with many other organizations associated with his academic positions.Starting in his mid-fifties, Dr. Finn began traveling extensively throughout the world.Richard was the longtime friend of George N. Torrey, Ph.D. of Melrose.Brother of the late Doris Wilbar, Robert Finn and John Finn.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, September 9 at 9 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours on Tuesday from 4 - 6 PM. Interment with military honors presented by the US Army in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
