Mr. Richard T. Macneil Sr. a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully in Wilmington on January 16, 2014, at age 92.

Richard was born on August 5, 1921 in the Ancon Canal Zone of Panama, one of ten children of the late Henry T. and Jennie W. (Perrott) Macneil.He was raised in Melrose and graduated from Melrose High School.Richard proudly served his country in the US Army Air Force during WWII. He received extensive training in aircraft piloting, gunnery, navigation, and mechanics.Honorably discharged in 1945, he completed his education at Northeastern University where he received a degree in Engineering.

Richard worked as an Engineer for Raytheon for many years.He was a member of Wyoming Lodge AF&AM in Melrose, and the Knights Templar. During his spare time, he loved riding his motorcycle, cooking, and working on his sailboat, and power boat.Above all else, Mr. Macneil was a devoted family man who loved spending time with his family for Sunday dinners, and watching his beloved Red Sox.

His legacy will live on within the walls of the cherished log cabin that he and his son, Richard, built in Barnstead, NH.

Richardwas the devoted father of Cheryl Holmes and her husband Jonathan of Sabattus, ME, Elizabeth Smith and her husband Glen of Blackstone, Richard T. Macneil Jr. and his wife Maria of Wilmington, Thomas Macneil of Seekonk, and Scott Macneil and his wife Christine of N. Reading.Former husband of June Nightingale of Sabattus, ME.Dear brother of George T. Macneil of TX, Donald J. Macneil of WY, Marguerite L. Russell of NH, Nancy M. Hynes of FL, and the late H. David Macneil, Elinor V. Macneil, Elizabeth H. "Betty" Bertoulin, Ruth A. Austin, and Jeanne F. Fletcher.Cherished grandfather of Daniel, Nathan, Rebecca, Joshua, Emily, Jillian, Rachel, Lucas, Alicia, Nicholas, Duncan, and Megan.Loving great-grandfather of Jonathan, Gabriel, Lily, Evan, Isaya, Grace, Dennis, Dylan, Angel, and Isabell.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Richard's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Monday, January 20 from 4-8 PM, and for his Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home celebrated on Tuesday at 10AM. Interment with US Air Force military honors in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
