Mrs. Rita L. (Klamans) Amoroso, a Melrose resident since 1961, passed away peacefully with her loving family at her side at Aberjona Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Winchester on Wednesday morning, February 1, 2012, at the age of 81.

Rita was born on June 9, 1930, in Somerville, one of four children of the late Hilmar K. Klamans and Margaret M. (Reddington) Klamans.She was raised in Stoneham where she was a proud member of Stoneham High School, Class of 1948.She then received a degree in nursing from Chelsea Memorial Hospital School in 1951.Rita worked at Melrose Wakefield Hospital for 10 years and at the Elmhurst Nursing Home as Director of Nurses for 7 more years.

Family came first with Rita, whether it was her beloved siblings, going on yearly trips with her late husband Sam, or caring for her children and grandchildren.She especially treasured each of her 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.Nana took an active and loving role in their lives, always attending their games and many special events.

As a career nurse, Rita was involved with the Harvard University Nurses' Health Study for many years.In her spare time, she loved knitting, reading, and spending time with family and friends.

Rita was the beloved wife of the late Salvatore "Sam" Amoroso with whom she shared nearly 50 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Denise M. Richards and her husband James of Centerpoint, TX, Patricia M. Cleary and her husband Robert of Saugus, Joseph Amoroso and his wife Kim of Marblehead, and Lisa M. Dooley of N. Reading.Dear sister of Carol R. Grecco, Victor P. Klamans, both of Stoneham and the late Hilmar K. Klamans Jr.Cherished grandmother of Brett, Travis, Rachel, Christopher, Alexandra, Eric, Marc, Megan, Ryan, and Jason.Loving great-grandmother of Amara, Elijah, Natalie, and Sophia. She is also survived by several sisters and brothers-in-law, and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember Rita's life by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, February 6 from 4-8 PM and again on Tuesday morning at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.

Gifts in her memory may be made to All Care Hospice, 16 City Hall Sq., Lynn, MA 01901.
