Robert J. Casey of Melrose died peacefully at home on August 15, 2014 at the age of 93, after a long illness.

Bob was known for his sharp wit and love of life. He worked hard to provide a good life for his family in whom he took great pride. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Bob was born in Malden, the son of Daniel F. Casey and Mary (Long) Casey. He was raised in Melrose where he attended Saint Mary's School and Melrose High School.As a young man he was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps. He later served his country with honor during World War Two as an Aviation Specialist in the United States Navy in Panama and Cuba.

In 1947 Bob married Muriel Joan Kenney of Melrose. He joined the Melrose Fire Department in 1952,rising to the rank of lieutenant with 35 years of service at his retirement.Bob was recognized by the mayor of Melrose for bravery in the line of duty in 1968. He was a member of the VFW Harold O. Young Post 2394 and the Westside Club of Wakefield.

Bob and Muriel were happily married for 57 years. They loved visiting family in Rhode Island and vacationing in New Hampshire and Maine in the summers. They were avid supporters of the Melrose High School Band in the 1970s and 80s. In retirement they traveled widely in the United States and Europe. They took great joy in their children and grand children.

Robert was preceded in death by his wife Muriel and his 6 brothers and sisters. He was the loving father of Kenneth R. Casey, husband Dr. David Dailey, ofMelrose,Douglas J. Casey, wife Lisa (Ray) Casey, of Nashua NH, and Lynne (Casey) Chow, husband Timothy, of Norwich VT. He was the proud grandfather of Andrew Casey, DanielCasey and ChristinaChow. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Margaret (Kenney) Peters of Haverhill MA and many nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Bob's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose during visiting hours on Wednesday, August 20 from 4-8PM, and again on Thursday where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 9AM.Interment with military honors presented by the US Navy at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. In lieu of flowers, gifts in honor of Bobmay be made to Hallmark Health VNA and Hospice, 178 Savin St. Malden, MA 02148.
