Robert J. Holden Jr., long time Malden resident, died on Monday, March 5, 2018 at Rosewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody.He was 92.

Robert was born in Malden on April 9, 1925, one of two children of the late Robert J. and Ruby P. (Stevenson) Holden Sr.As a young boy, Robert enjoyed spending his summers on his grandparent's farm in Canada, where he helped milk the cows and got a kick out of being pulled around on a wagon by a goat.He also enjoyed skating on the frozen ponds around Malden during the winter months.

He would go on to graduate from Malden High School in 1943.After high school, he was happy to be in charge of the Malden High class reunions and stayed close with his classmates over the years.

Robert joined the Navy, and served in the Pacific Theater of WWII.After the war, he met his best friend, and future wife Katherine at a church dance.They were married September 27, 1947.He would be recalled to active duty, and served stateside during the Korean Conflict.

After his time in the service ended, Robert and Katherine settled in Malden where they would raise their family. He began working at Malden Savings Bank, and would retire after 41 years of service.He was a Mortgage Officer, and eventually became Vice President. He really cared about his community, and was very active in numerous organizations in Malden, including the Malden Lions, and the Masonic Lodge of Sterling, where he was Grand Past Master.He also served on the board of the Davenport House, and was a big part of keeping the building in good repair.

More than anything Robert loved his family and friends.He would do anything for his family.He was very active in his children's lives and attended as many of their functions as he could.You could find him working around his home, repairing anything that needed to be fixed, working crossword puzzles, or reading the newspaper from cover to cover.

Robert and Katherine also enjoyed spending time with their friends.Anything from a get together to play cards or dinner, their friendships were very important to them.

Robert and Katherine did so much together; they were truly each other's best friends.He loved to dance, and he and Katherine had an affection for Ballroom Dancing.He could dance circles around most anyone.He liked traveling, especially road trips, and some of his favorite destinations were Florida, Damariscotta Maine, Nova Scotia, and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire.

Robert was a wonderful man with a giant heart, and will be dearly missed by all who were blessed to know him.His family though, will miss him most, and the wonderful memories of their husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather will help carry them through.

Robert is the beloved husband of Katherine L. Holden with whom he shared 70 years of marriage. Beloved father of Robert J. Holden III and his wife Adrienne of Peabody, Alane Kelly and her husband Michael of West Newbury, and Brian W. Holden and his wife Janice of Billerica.Dear brother of the late Stoughton B. Holden and his surviving wife Margaret of Winchester.Cherished grandfather of Joshua, Michael, Seth, Patrick and his wife Bridgette, Daniel and his wife Fanny, Kevin and his wife Brandi, Lucas, and Jacqueline.Adored great grandfather of Maeve, Gemma, Finn, and Teagan.
