Mr. Robert O. "Buddy" Shannon, Sr., a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, July 12, 2011 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital.He was 86.
Robert Ogden Shannon was born on August 30, 1924 in Woburn, one of three children of the late Robert J. Shannon and Nellie M. (Hopper) Shannon.
Raised on the family farm in Woburn, Mr. Shannon graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1942.As the son of a farmer, Buddy voluntarily enlisted into the US Navy to serve his country during World War II.After his discharge in 1946, he married the love of his life, Anne Walker on April 7, 1946.They settled in Melrose to raise their three children with Buddy working primarily as a carpenter remodeling homes.His specialty was flooring, ceramic tile and linoleum; however, he remodeled bathrooms and kitchens as well.
He and Anne owned and operated the Shenandoah Guest House in Ocean Park, Maine for many years.The 6-bedroom bed and breakfast was his pride and joy and he loved the many summers he spent living and working there.More a hobby than a business, Buddy loved the time he spent with yearly guests and visits with family and friends to the cottage.
An easy going man with a charming smile and quick Irish wit, he was forever proud of his beloved family.He will be lovingly remembered for the many lessons he taught his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
He was the beloved husband of the late Anne (Walker) Shannon with whom he shared 52 years.Devoted father of Robert O. Shannon, Jr. and his wife Jayne of Billerica, Gail Finos and her husband William of Lynnfield, and Heather Shannon and her husband Stewart Field of Saco, ME.Dear brother of Richard Shannon and his wife Regina of Woburn and Elinor Dustin and her husband Cedric of Bow, NH.Cherished grandfather of Robert O. Shannon, III and his wife Anne of Andover, Tara Shannon of N. Andover, Jonathan Shannon and his wife Lucia of Malden, Jocelyn Fleming and her husband Nicholas of N. Reading, Courtney Finos of Boston, and Hayley Finos of S. Boston.Loving great grandfather of Jack Shannon, Lily Shannon and Avery Fleming.Also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Funeral Service to honor and remember his life will be held in the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Saturday, July 16 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours on Friday from 4-8 PM.Interment with military honors presented by the US Navy in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
