Rose A. (Avola) Campanello
Born in Woburn on May 20, 1930, Rose was one of three children of the late Giovanni and Anna (Costa) Avola.She grew up in East Boston, graduated from East Boston High School, and went on to work at the American Girl shoe company. Rose had a close knit circle of girlfriends who enjoyed spending time together. One of their favorite activities was dancing, and it was at Moseley's on the Charles dance club in Dedham MA where Rose met her husband Russ.They shared a love for dancing and, through their life, never missed an opportunity to be the first on the dance floor. They dated and danced for almost 5 years, through his service in the US Navy, and were married on May 21, 1955.
The newlywed couple moved to New Haven Connecticut for Russ' work. There, they had two sons before moving back to Massachusetts and settling in Saugus, where they would have a daughter and another son and spend the rest of their years. Rose always said her dream was to be married and have four children, and she did exactly that. She was involved in all aspects of her children's lives, and, with Russ, instilled in them the values of hard work, integrity, and good manners. Her children were the source of great joy and comfort throughout her life. When the grandchildren arrived, they became the center of her happiest times.She loved sharing in their lives, participating in their activities, celebrating their accomplishments or anything that gave her a reason to be together with them.She loved being Nana.
When Russ retired, they enjoyed visiting new places, and took several trips together before his passing in 1998. After his death, Rose decided that there was more of life for her to enjoy and, while continuing to be part of her children and grandchildren's lives, she created a life of her own.A devoted Catholic, she started each day by attending mass at Saint Margaret Parish in Saugus. There, she developed many new friendships that she cherished. She took part in many events at the Saugus Senior Center. Rose was also a committed volunteer visiting residents at the former Louise Caroline Nursing Home, bringing smiles, conversation, and comfort to everyone she met. These connections with her church family, the volunteers, and those she visited were of the greatest importance to her and sustained her up until her passing.To know Rose was to love her.It was a gift to have her in your life, and her patience, love, selflessness, and devotion to the care of others will be missed by all.
Rose was the beloved wife of the late Russell R. Campanello with whom she shared 43 years of marriage.She will be dearly missed by her children; Russ and his wife Betsey of Lincoln MA; John and his wife Karen of Manchester NH; Mary of Sanford ME; Leonard of Ipswich MA; her grandchildren Shelly, Billy, Rowan, Grace, Faith, Nina and Sarah; and several nieces and nephews.She was the loving sister of the late Avalon Avola and the late Salvatore Avola, who was killed in action in WWII.
Relatives and friends are invited to visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, March 18 from 4-7pm.All attendees are required to wear masks, maintain social distancing, and pay their respects and exit the Funeral Home promptly to allow other guests to enter.Funeral and committal services will remain private.
