Russell A. Berg of Melrose, 95, died on September 9, 2009 at 11:45 AM.

Mr. Berg was born in New York City on April 22, 1914 to Katherine (Goodkind) and John Berg.He spent most of his youth in New Haven, Connecticut.Mr. Berg graduated from Yale University in 1936 with a degree in electrical engineering.During his working life he was employed by a number of engineering firms in the Greater Boston area.He was a civilian employee of the Army Signal Corps during World War II, during which time he traveled to North Africa and helped design and build a radio relay to aid the allied war effort in that theatre of the war.

In 1942, Mr. Berg married Shirley (Campbell) of Sewickley, Pennsylvania.The family lived in New Jersey and Connecticut before moving to Melrose in 1955.

Mr. Berg was preceded in death by his wife Shirley in 1986.Later he married Dorothy (Glasson) O'Connor, formerly of Newton, Massachusetts.

Mr. Berg was a long-standing member of the Pelagic Sailing Club of Boston, the Wally Byam Caravan Club of New England and of the Great Books Club of Melrose.He enjoyed sailing, traveling in a caravan with other Airstream owners, and reading.

He and Dorothy sailed together in the British Virgin Islands and in 1993 helped bring a boat north on the Intracostal Waterway.Mr. Berg and Dorothy participated in 10 caravan trips with the Wally Byam Club.

He was the loving father of Gretchen of Chelmsford, Massachusetts and her husband Mike Goldberg; Peter Berg and his wife Linda of North Attleboro, Massachusetts; and Geoffrey Berg and his wife Dianne of Warren, Rhode Island.Mr Berg was the cherished grandfather of Nicole (Berg) Chalfoun of Los Angeles; Michael Berg of Denver, Colorado; Christian Berg of North Attleboro, Massachusetts; Katherine Berg of New York City; and Nathaniel Berg of Warren, Rhode Island.

A Funeral Service in honor and remembrance of Mr. Berg's life will be held in the Unitarian Universalist Church, 70 W. Emerson St., Melrose on Monday, September 14 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday from 2-6 PM.Gifts in his memory may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers 01923.
