Mr. Russell W. Cann of Malden died Thursday afternoon, August 17, 2006 at the Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He was 85 years old.
He leaves his wife of 65 years, Virginia R. (Cannon) Cann; four children,Larry Cann and his wife Sherry of Holden, Brian Cann and his wife Joan of Malden, Sharon Cann and her dear friend Maureen O'Hearn of Derry, N.H. and Andrew Cann and his wife Beth of Reading. Brother of Ruth Fraser of Burlington and the late Louise Johnson. Also survived by 11 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren, nieces & nephews. He was born in Everett, son of the late Woodworth and Mildred (Burgess) Cann and lived all his life in Malden.
A skilled laborer, Mr. Cann was a rigger for the United States Navy, working in Navy yards in Charlestown, South Boston and retiring from the Portsmouth Navy yard in 1982. He was proud to be a part of a generation that was accomplished at many trades.
A Navy veteran of World War II he was among the first wave to invade Normandy during the D-Day invasion. He was a proud veteran and a member of the Saugus Post #2364 V.F.W.
He was a simple family man who cherished his many friendships and times spent with his family. He was an avid reader, informed historian and enjoyed dancing and band music, all of which were important to him until the last days of his life.
