Russell E. Watts MD of Melrose died Tuesday evening, March 6, 2007 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 81 years old.
Dr. Watts was born September 12, 1925 in Kingsville, OH, son of the late Mack P. Watts and Mildred (Leach) Watts.
Russell was raised and educated in Canton, OH. His college studies at Ohio Wesleyan University were interrupted for his service in the US Navy from 1944-1946, where he met his future wife, Mary. He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University, class of 1948 and from University of Rochester Medical School, class of 1951. He began his post graduate medical training as an intern at Ohio State University Hospital and completed his residency in general medicine and surgery at the Malden Hospital in 1954. Dr. Watts opened his private practice in Malden on November 8, 1954. From 1967 to 1985, he was Chairman of the Department of Family Practice at the Malden Hospital. In 1985, he moved his practice over to the Boston Regional Medical Center in Stoneham, and retired from there in 1991. Throughout his 37 years in practice, Dr. Watts was a devoted and caring physician to many families in the Malden area.
Aside from his medical practice, Russell was strongly involved with his community. He served on the Adelaide Breed Bayrd Foundation for over 30 years as a trustee, treasurer and from 1991, as the President. He was also a long time and very active member of the Centre United Methodist Church in Malden, serving on many committees including the Board of Trustees, Finance Committee, and as Chairman of the Building Committee for the rebuilding of the church after it burned down in 1971.
Dr. Watts was an avid golfer, belonging to the Winchester Country Club for 48 years. His other wide range of interests included tennis, skiing, deep sea fishing, contract bridge, cooking, and an indefatigable love for travel.
Dr. Russell Watts was the beloved husband for 58 years of Mary (Kilpatrick) Watts. Devoted father of William E. Watts and his wife, Cheryl of Orange, CT, John R. Watts of Spokane, WA, and Suzanne M. Watts of Medford. He also leaves behind his sister, Jean M. Tanger of Painesville, OH, and five grandsons, Benjamin, Samuel, Adam, Wade, and Joel Watts. Dr. Watts has donated his body to medical science.
