Ruth A. (Ward) Oatis, 93 of Melrose died Monday evening March 28, 2005 at the Melrose-Wakefield Hospital following a prolonged illness.
Ruth was born in Chelsea October 16, 1911, daughter of the late Henry G. Ward and Ardella (Carroll) Ward.She was raised in Chelsea, graduating from St. Rose High School and was a former resident of Stoneham.Mrs. Oatis has been a Melrose resident since 1939.Ruth was a secretary for 10 years at the Soldiers Home in Chelsea.For many years Ruth was very active in St. Mary's Church in Melrose, where she was a founding member of the CYO, and was greatly involved with the religious education program.She also served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a member of Our Lady's Sodality, and was involved with R.I.C.A., an education group at St. Mary's.Among Ruth's many other good works, she ran the "Down Town", a drop-in center for teenagers in the 1960's, and for ten years she volunteered at St. Francis House in Boston.Ruth was also a member of the Melrose Women's Club.
Ruth shared 47 years of marriage with the late John H. Oatis.She was the mother of John H. Oatis of Melrose, the late Peter H. Oatis, Diane O. Curran of Salem and William W. Oatis of Wilmington. Mother- in-law of Marylou Oatis of Melrose, Judy Oatis of Shrewsbury, Raymond A. Curran of Salem and Joan Oatis of Wilmington. She was the sister of Dorothea Laben of Melrose, Henry J. Ward of Stoneham,P. Arthur Ward of Cleveland, OH and Mabel Dunn of Croften, MD.Ruth is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
