Mr. Samuel Adams, a Brewster resident and formerly of Stoneham and Melrose, passed away on Saturday morning, January 30, 2010 surrounded by his loving family at the Daniels House in Reading.He was 85 years old.
Mr. Adams was born on October 24, 1924 in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, the son of the late Harold P. Adams and Margaret (Holyoke) Adams.
Mr. Adams was raised and educated in Melrose.He went on to Norwich University in Vermont until he was called to serve in the Pacific during World War II.A member of the US Navy, Sam was stationed aboard the USS Tulagi.Upon his discharge, he returned to Norwich University to receive his undergraduate degree and continued his education in the graduate program at Boston University.For 30 years, Mr. Adams worked as a traffic manager for the paper company, Kimberly Clark.
He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Melrose and the Boosters Club of Stoneham.A hockey player at Melrose High School and Norwich University, Sam continued playing in the Melrose Old Timers League.
Upon his retirement, he and his wife, Carol, built their home in Brewster where they had vacationed for many years.He worked part time for Pro Fence Co. and volunteered for Brewster Meals on Wheels, Hospice Care, and the Council of Aging.
Sam loved baking, gardening, walking the beach, a good joke, his dogs, and travelling to Bermuda with his wife and their friends.At the Cape, one of his hobbies was being a beekeeper, and he would often bring honey to his many friends and neighbors.A warm and friendly person, he will be remembered for always having an open door for family and friends.
He was the beloved husband of Carol A. (Campbell) Adams with whom he shared 61 years of marriage.He was the devoted father of Marcia O'Neil and her husband Michael of W. Newbury, Corrine Kimball and her husband Phil of Byfield, Susan Campbell and her husband Paul of Brooklyn, NY, Bette Burke and her husband Joseph of Reading, Samuel Adams Jr. and his wife Genna of Eagle, CO, Nancy A. McClorey and her husband Steven of Melrose, Linda Penney and her husband Mike of Hooksett, NH, and Amy Barry and her husband Tom of E. Bridgewater.He was also the dear brother of Holyoke P. Adams and his wife Jean of Corvallis, OR.Cherished grandfather of Michael G. O'Neil Jr., Meghan O'Neil, Leah Dobbins, Emily Kimball, Zachary Campbell, Sam Campbell, Paul Zurek, Patrick Zurek, Madeline Burke, Michelle Burke, Sammy Adams, Jessica Adams, Daniel McClorey, Meghan McClorey, Sean McClorey, Kay Penney, Claire Penney, Jackson Penney, Molly Barry, Abby Barry, and Thomas Barry.Loving great grandfather of Donovan O'Neil, Brady O'Neil and Tucker O'Neil.
Funeral Service at the First Congregational Church, 121 W. Foster St., Melrose on Saturday, February 6 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday 4-8 PM.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam's honor to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
