Mrs. Santa (Collerone) Avola, a longtime resident of East Boston, passed away peacefully at Eastpointe Rehabilitation Center in Chelsea on February 12, 2014, at age 91.
Santa was born in Italy on August 20, 1922.She was raised in Italy and along with her family, came to the United States in 1968.East Boston became their home, but she never forgot her Italian roots.
Santa's life was centered around her family.She was a warm, hospitable woman who was devoted to her family, and kind to everyone she met.The matriarch of the family, she loved gathering her children, siblings, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren together for a big meal and always made sure nobody left hungry.True to her Italian heritage, she loved cooking, especially pasta, and enjoyed getting together with anyone for a cup of coffee.Above all else, she was most happy when surrounded by her grandchildren, and they in turn cherished her presence and loving care.
Mrs. Avola was the beloved wife of the late Angelo Avola with whom she shared 44 years of marriage.Devoted mother of Salvatore Avola and his wife Aurora of Malden, and Maria A. McGrath and her husband James of Saugus.Loving daughter of the late Salvatore and Mariastella (Bonura) Collerone.Dear sister of Mariannina Razza of Revere, Gaetano Collerone of Italy, Luigi Collerone of Malden, and the late Maddalena Bonura.Cherished grandmother of Eleonora Margolis, Annalisa Imperio, Jim McGrath, Teresa McGrath, and Jack McGrath.Loving great-grandmother of Amanda, and Valentina.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Santa's life for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, February 14 from 4-8 PM, and again on Saturday morningat 9:00AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00AM.Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
