Rev. Sewell S. Hayes, of Rockport, and formerly of Gloucester, died on Friday, May 8, 2020 at Den-Mar Health and Rehabilitation Center in Rockport.He was 86.
Born in Melrose on February 14, 1934, Sewell is one of three children of the late William S. D. and Elizabeth (nee Cratsley) Hayes.He attended Melrose High School before transferring to Phillips Academy in Andover, graduating in 1951.He went on to attend Harvard, graduated from Hope College in Holland Michigan, and graduated from New Brunswick Theological Seminary in New Jersey.
An ordained minister, Sewell served in several Congregational Churches in Maine, Pennsylvania and Gloucester Ma.He was a fan of music and the arts.He was known for playing his saxophone on Maine Street in Gloucester.He enjoyed painting and writing poetry.He was a people person, and got his energy from helping others in need.He dearly loved his family and was exceptionally active in their lives.
Sewell's big heart and generosity will be missed by all.
Sewell was the beloved husband of the late Virginia M. (Marston) Hayes. Devoted father of William F. Hayes of Rochester, NH, stepfather of Mark Nielson and his wife Patricia of Danvers, Dawn Howland of Mendon, Wade Nielson and his wife Connie of Marblehead, and Glen Nielson and his wife Patricia of Ashland, ME. Dear brother of David F. Hayes and his wife Joan of Gloucester, and the late Birton C. Hayes.
Services at this time will be for immediate family. A Celebration of Life will be announced when all may gather to remember and honor Sewell.
