She was born in Boston, August 1, 1931, a daughter of the late Duncan and Mary (Chipman) McRae and step-daughter to John Hicks.
A devoted wife and mother, she was very involved in the Melrose community and raised her family in Melrose before moving to Falmouth, MA in 1981, where she and her husband, Ernie, operated The Moorings Lodge, a bed and breakfast, for 25 years.
Shirley was the beloved wife of Ernest Benard with whom she shared60 years of marriage.Loving mother of Richard and his wife Cynthia of Lakeville, Gary and his wife Susan of N. Reading, Michael and his wife Donna of E. Hampton, CT, Gerry Carney and his wife Kathy of Pocasset and the late Jeffrey Benard.Dear sister of the late William McRae, Phyllis (McRae) Groves and George McRae.Cherished grandmother of Matthew, Kate, Elspeth, Daniel, Ernie, Andrew, Chelsea, Gerry, Kerri and Shannon.
