Sidney C. Field

Mr. Sidney C. Field, Jr., a lifelong Melrose resident, passed away on Thursday evening, January 17, 2013 at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital, at the age of 82.

Sidney was born in Beverly and graduated from Melrose High School with the Class of 1948. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and went on to graduate from Northeastern University with an Engineering degree in 1958. He met his future beloved wife, Joanne "Jo" Carr on a blind date and they married March 3, 1956. They happily settled in Melrose, raising three children, and Sid and Jo became actively involved in the Melrose community.

As an avid sportsman he played hockey, baseball and football at Melrose High School. From 1960 through 1970, Sid served as the Superintendent of the Parks Commission for the City of Melrose. He always made sure the ponds were flooded for hockey and ice-skating. His passion for athletics led him and others to establish the youth hockey program in Melrose, teaching six and seven year olds the fundamentals of the sport. From 1970 until his retirement in 2003, Sid worked for Hayes Engineering as a Civil Engineer.

Sid was also an avid reader and loved to golf. He became a member of Bellevue Golf Club in 1969 and was named an honorary lifetime member. With a great depth of knowledge, he was a natural teacher and helped each of his children with their golf swing. He had a great chip shot, and found particular success on the third hole at Bellevue. He also enjoyed travelling, supporting the Boston sports teams, and watching college football on Saturdays.

Sid was a very lucky person. After surviving heart problems at a young age, with the loving care and support of Jo, he lived many more spirited years. He could be found playing a competitive game of cards with an afternoon scotch and lived a life of excitement and purpose. He found particular joy in watching his grandchildren compete in their hockey, baseball, and football games. He and Jo enjoyed the winter months in Punta Gorda, Florida, and summer trips to Lake Winnipesauke where he began visiting as a child. He had a great sense of humor, but above all else, he was a devoted family man and cherished the time he spent with his family.

Sid was the son of the late Florence and Sidney C. Field, Sr. of Melrose. He was the beloved husband of Joanne "Jo" (Carr) Field with whom he shared nearly 57 years of marriage. Devoted father of Douglas A. Field and his wife Linda of Melrose, Deborah A. MacLeod and her husband Daryl of Melrose, and Carol L. Wilkie and her husband James of Melrose. Cherished grandfather of Elizabeth and Douglas A. Field, Jr., Christopher Brauer and his wife Deborah, Meghan and Meredith MacLeod, Jacquelyn, Jillian, Erin, and James Wilkie, Jr. Loving great-grandfather of Rocky, Carter, Thomas, and William.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Sid's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Tuesday, January 22 from 4-8PM, and for his Funeral Service at the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose celebrated on Wednesday at 9 AM.
