Mrs. Sonja E. (Lawson) Durland, a longtime Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Wednesday morning September 1, 2010 at the Bear Hill Nursing Center in Wakefield.She was 95 years old.

Sonja was born on November 21, 1914 in Everett, one of two children of the late Harold Lawson and Ellen (Albinson ) Lawson.

Mrs. Durland was raised in Malden and graduated from Malden High School.A member of the First Congregational Church, she enjoyed her membership in the Women's Circle.She was also a member of the Good Sam Club and the Cottage Park Yacht Club in Winthrop.After living in Melrose for nearly 60 years, Sonja moved to Venice, Florida where she had lived for 7 years.During her leisure time, she loved camping and was an avid boater.

She was the beloved wife of the late William L. Durland, Jr. with whom she shared 42 years of marriage.Devoted mother of William L. Durland, III and his wife Valerie of Mirror Lake, NH, Bruce H. Durland and his wife Trudy of Wakefield, and Paul R. Durland and his wife Deborah of S. Darmouth.Dear sister of the late Roy Lawson.Cherished grandmother of Susan Nicholas, William "Todd" Durland, Jonathan Durland, and Kimberly Durland.Loving great-grandmother of Cayden and Ella Durland, Thomas and Olivia Nicholas, and Jessica Durland.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Service at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose will be held privately.
