Mrs. Sophia C. (Grasso) McCurdy, a resident of N. Reading, and formerly of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Lahey Medical Center in Burlington.

Sophia was born in East Boston on September 28, 1941, daughter of the late Joseph and Johanna M. (Macrina) Grasso. Raised in East Boston and Revere, Sophia was married to Edward R. McCurdy on October 4, 1959 at St. Joseph's Church in Malden. They settled in Melrose, and she stayed at home to raise her two sons. After they had grown, she began a career as a medical secretary working at various offices throughout the local area. Most recently, she enjoyed her 13 years of employment with Reading Internal Medicine.

Sophia was a loyal, loving, and caring person. Her family relied on strength as a mother, and wife, and for her ability to bring everyone together. She loved entertaining at her home whether living in Melrose, and N. Andover.

She was also an animal lover and strong advocate for animal rights.She had a special place in her heart for cats and worked tirelessly to find proper homes for stray cats through her work with the Melrose Humane Society. She rescued, adopted, and cared for numerous cats over the years working with the Humane Society.

Above all else, Sophia loved being with her family. She was happiest when doing anything with her husband, children, siblings, and grandchildren.In particular, she loved travelling with her family. She cherished memories of trips to California, Colorado, and to visit her sons, and grandchildren.She also loved day trips throughout New England, and visiting New York City with Ed to attend Broadway shows or concerts. She will be lovingly remembered for her steadfast love and devotion to her family.

She was the beloved wife of Edward R. McCurdy with whom she shared 55 years of marriage. Devoted mother of Keith E. McCurdy and his wife Amanda of San Jose, CA, and Kevin M. McCurdy of Centennial, CO. Dear sister of Steven Grasso and his wife Christine of Melrose, and Joseph Parrett and his wife Debbie of Melrose. Cherished grandmother of Kyle, Keith Tyler, and Christina. Loving sister-in-law of Nancy Graziano and her husband Gerard of Wakefield, and the late Ruth McCurdy. Also survived by several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor of Sophia's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Saturday from 2-5PM, followed by her Funeral Service celebrated at 5PM. Gifts in her memory may be made to the Scleroderma Foundation, New England, 462 Boston Street, Suite 1-1, Topsfield, MA 01983.
