Sumner C. Davis
Sumner was born June 13, 1922 in Lynn, a son of the late George N. Davis and Gladys (Johnson) Davis.
Mr. Davis was raised in the Linden section of Malden.He was a member of the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and a captain of the Sons of the American Legion Squadron 69.In 1942, he joined the US Navy as a photographer and was awarded the title of Petty Officer 3rd class.While stationed in California, he met and married his wife, Kay.After moving back to Malden, Sumner opened the Davis Camera Store and operated a film developing plant that serviced the Carrol Cut Rate Drug stores in the surrounding area.He also had a golf ball distributorship, a Correct Craft boat dealership and was a bus driver for the Shiner's Hospital for 5 years.
Sumner was very active with the American Legion.He was commander of the Malden American Legion, Post 69 in 1956, commander of the Middlesex county of the American Legion, state chairman of the sons of the American Legion and was honored twice as the grand marshal of Malden Veterans Day parade.He was an 18 year member of the Malden Lions Club, 28 year member of Malden Auxiliary Police, President of the Melrose Veterans Club, President of the Wakefield Retired Men's Club, member of Mount Vernon Lodge AF&AM and a member of Amvets.Mr. Davis was awarded several certificates of appreciation for his service of the Malden Lions Club, Malden Police, the Mount Vernon Lodge of Masons and the Shriner's Hospital for Children.
Sumner Davis was the beloved husband of Katie O. "Kay" (Stewart) Davis with whom he shared 64 years of marriage.Devoted father of Stephen E. Davis and his wife Kathy of N. Weymouth, Pamela E. Overton of Stoneham, Paula J. Edwards and her husband Tim of Melrose and Sumner C. Davis, Jr. and his wife Diane of Stoneham.Cherished grandfather of Russell Davis, Amy MacDonald, Janette Davis, Ben Overton, John Edwards, Corey Edwards, Elissa Davis and Brittany Davis.Loving great-grandfather of Madison MacDonald and Samantha Edwards.
