Thomas S. Murphy, of Tewksbury, and formerly longtime of Stoneham, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 3, 2022 in Lowell, at age 80.
Tom was born in Cambridge, MA on November 4, 1941, one of four children of the late John and Helen (Sullivan) Murphy. Raised in North Cambridge, he graduated from Matignon High School and attended Bentley College. After meeting Sharon Foley at Cronin’s Pub in Cambridge, they were married and made a home in Stoneham to raise a daughter. Tom worked over 20 years as a custodian for the Winchester Public Schools where he enjoyed interacting with the students and faculty.
Tom enjoyed winters in Boynton Beach, FL. Being an avid golfer, he always found a course to spend the day on. He loved going to the driving range and was a passionate supporter of the Boston sports teams, especially the NE Patriots. Blessed with a sharp mind, he was a sudoku and math whiz, and a music lover, especially Neil Diamond. Earlier in life, he enjoyed summer vacations with the Murphys, Hannigans and Millers in Dennisport on Cape Cod.
With a dry Irish wit, he was always up for a laugh, and never hesitated to be silly with his grandchildren. He generously doted on his grandchildren their entire lives, and loved spontaneous trips for ice cream, Chinese food, or to BJ’s for chocolate chip cookies.
Tom will be deeply missed, but lovingly remembered for his strong dedication to family and love for a good joke.
Tom was the beloved husband of Sharon A. (Foley) Murphy. Devoted father of Susan Bishop and husband Steve of Tewksbury. Proud Papa of Sarah and Tommy Bishop. Brother of Jack Murphy of TN and the late Mary Hannigan & Helen Miller. Also survived by many nieces & nephews.
Relatives & friends are invited to visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Thursday, Sept. 8 from 4-7pm, and to his Funeral Mass at St. Patrick Church, 71 Central St., Stoneham celebrated on Friday, Sept. 9 at 10am. Interment in St. Patrick Cemetery, Stoneham.
