Mr. Thomas H. "Smitty" Smith, a longtime resident of Melrose, died on Sunday, September 6, 2009 at home surrounded by his family after a period of declining health.He was 90 years old. Mr. Thomas Smith was born in Melrose on December 18, 1918, beloved son of the late Thomas H. Smith and Alice (Hallahan) Smith.Thomas or "Smitty" as he was known was a Melrose Firefighter for 30 years, retiring at age 57.He served in the US Navy as a Seabee during WWII, building various construction projects overseas.Mr. Smith also worked for Carpenter & Sons and Mahoney Builders and Top Notch Construction.He enjoyed crafting and building more than 20 houses, loved children and dancing.Smitty was a car fanatic who had a passion for antique cars.
Thomas Smith was the beloved husband of the late Florence G. (Lynch) Smith.Devoted father of Thomas H. Smith Jr. and his wife Susan of Newington, NH and Joyce E. Bluestein and her husband Keith of Midlothian, VA.Dear brother of Natalie Skaare of Melrose and the late Shirley Antico.Cherished grandfather of Dawn Foglietta, Jaime Serge, Brett Bluestein, and Kate Bluestein.Loving great grandfather of Hannah Serge; uncle of Michelle DeRocco and her husband Robert; many nieces and nephews; great-uncle of Alexandra DeRocco.
Funeral Service at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., MELROSE, Thursday, September 10 at 10 AM.Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend.Visiting hours Wednesday 4-8 PM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
