Vincenzo “Vincent” Stamegna

Vincenzo “Vincent” Stamegna, a resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 22, 2023, at age 91.

Vincenzo was born in Gaeta, Italy on February 2, 1932, one of three children of the late Gennaro and Elvira (DiFusco) Stamegna. Raised in Gaeta, Vincenzo immigrated at the end of WWII to the United States at age 19. He was drafted and served over five years in the US Army over two enlistments, receiving an honorable discharge in August of 1962. With many similar families from Italy, he settled in Somerville and was introduced to Eleanor Ventura, a daughter of Gaeta natives. They were married at St. Anthony’s church and made a home in Somerville. Vincent worked in Cambridge for Maple Leaf as a meat packer for many years.

Vincent maintained a simple, hardworking, and family centric life. He was happiest at home, enjoying woodworking, model ship building, but most of all tending his garden. After finding a home with a nice sunny backyard in Melrose, Vincent built a productive vegetable garden, often making his favorite vegetable stew with produce from the backyard.

With strong values, Vincent loved spending time with his family, especially a round of pool with his three grandsons in the family room. Throughout his life, he always maintained connections to his family in Italy and kept his roots in Gaeta close to his heart. He will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered for his humble nature and steadfast dedication to family.

Vincent was the beloved husband of Eleanor R. (Ventura) Stamegna with whom he shared 70 years of marriage. Devoted father of Annette Anderson and her husband Warren of Lynnfield. Loving grandfather of Gregory Anderson and his wife Emily, Glen Anderson, and Garrett Anderson. Dear brother of Angelo Stamegna and his wife Maria of Los Angeles, CA, and Maria Fantasia of Italy. Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to gather during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose, on Monday, March 27 from 9-10am, followed by his Funeral Service celebrated at 10am. Interment with military honors by the US Army at Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. If you wish, donations can be made in Vincent’s name to the USO, PO Box 96860 Washington, DC 20077.
