Mrs. Virginia L. (Wheatly) Jackson Atkins, of Melrose, passed away peacefully at EPOCH Senior Healthcare in Melrose on Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the age of 92.
Virginia or "Ginni" as she was lovingly known was born on October 6, 1919 in Lynn, a daughter of the late Edward L. Wheatly and Nellie E. (Samuelsen) Wheatly.She lived in Melrose for 36 years where she worked as Secretary for the Superintendant of Melrose Public Schools.While living in Melrose, she also worked at the Melrose Cooperative Bank for 6 years.In 1982, she retired to South Dennis on Cape Cod and more recently, lived in York, Maine. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Melrose for many years, and the First Parish Congregational Church in York, ME for several years.
Ginni was a devoted family woman whose greatest joy in life was spending time with her children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.She was an enthusiastic hostess who loved entertaining the entire family with many parties, holidays, and get-togethers at her home at the Cape.She loved cooking for a full house, quilting, and keeping everyone organized.She will be lovingly remembered and forever missed for her loyalty and faithfulness to her family.
She was the beloved wife of the late Warren M. Jackson and Eldred R. Atkins.Devoted mother of Lee Vumbacco and her husband Joseph V. of Naples, FL, Holly A. Peddle and her husband George W. of Saugus, and stepmother of Reid Atkins and his wife Jill of Swampscott.Dear sister of the late Edward L. Wheatly.Cherished grandmother of Scott J. Vumbacco and his wife Suzie of Portchester, NY, Tracey V. Williams and her husband Mark of Bradenton, FL, Jared J. Peddle of Washington, DC, Nicholas G. Peddle of New Orleans, LA, Josh Atkins of CA, and Ben Atkins of Swampscott. Loving great-grandmother of Sarah Vumbacco, Sabrina Vumbacco, Stephen Vumbacco, Ainsley Williams, and Marisa Williams.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Ginni's life by gathering at the First United Methodist Church, 645 Main St., Melrose on Saturday, March 10 where her Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10:30 AM.Interment in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
