Mr. Vito J. DiBenedetto, a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away unexpectedly at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital on Tuesday, May 3, 2022, at age 85.
Vito was born in Boston on February 11, 1937, one of six children of the late John S. and Elena (Dantone) DiBenedetto. Raised in the North End, he graduated from Boston Trade School, and attended Northeastern University for Electrical Engineering. While still in school at Northeastern, he began working at the electrical components company, Stevens-Arnold, at age 19. After working there for 20 years, he had the knowledge and expertise to establish his own business, Dimension Magnetics Inc. in Wakefield. From 1976 to 2002, Vito manufactured accurate and precise electronic transformers for medical and audio equipment. After 26 years of owning his own business, he retired in 2002 at age 65.
With his workshop full of tools, Vito was meticulous in maintaining his Victorian home of 60 years that he loved. He also enjoyed photography, using a metal lathe, and always carried a vernier. Known as the “next Marconi”, he also enjoyed being a HAM radio operator with call letters W1NOL.
He will be deeply missed, but always lovingly remembered by his family.
Vito was the beloved husband of Ann M. (Ivens) DiBenedetto with whom he shared 62 years of marriage. Devoted father of Diann DiBenedetto of Melrose, and Steven DiBenedetto and his wife Leah of Winchester. Dear brother of Marie Spaulding, Constance DiBenedetto, Charles DiBenedetto, Elena Fitzpatrick, and the late John DiBenedetto. Loving grandfather of Matthew, Christopher, Andrea, Mario and Drew. Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives & friends are kindly invited to gather during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, May 8 from 2-5pm, and again on Monday at 10am before leaving in procession to Holy Cross Cemetery, 175 Broadway, Malden for his Graveside Ceremony at 11am.
