Mr. Walter V. Jensen, a Melrose resident, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at the Chelsea Soldier's Home, at the age of 85.
Walter was born on March 22, 1927 in Malden, one of four children of the late Ernest Jensen and Agnes E. (Tenney) Jensen.He was raised and educated in Malden and enlisted in the United States Army following his graduation from high school.A proud veteran of both WWII and the Korean War, Walter served his country honorably from 1945 -1946 as a Private 1st Class and from 1954 -1956 as an SP3.
Walter's working life was devoted to the Charlestown Navy Yard where he was a Security Guard for many years.He was also a member of the Merchant Marine and worked on tug boats in Boston Harbor.
During his spare time, Walter was an avid scrabble player, enjoyed bowling in the Senior League, crossword puzzles, and spending time at the beach.He enjoyed day trips around New England, meeting new people, and loved his family.He looked forward to the holiday season every year when he would reconnect with his son and his family in Alabama.Walter will be deeply missed by all but his family will cherish many memories and always remember his great sense of humor.
Walter was the beloved husband of Florence M. Lionetti with whom he shared nearly 20 years of marriage.Loving father of Michael Langford and his wife Joan of AL, and Sherry of NH.Step-father of Dr. Karen Spinelli of NY, Lisa Hirtle of VT, Stacy Randell of Gloucester, and the late Mary Randell.Dear brother of Marie O'Neil of Somerville and the late Louise Teehan and Ernest Jensen, Jr.Loving grandfather of Jason Langford and his wife Amber of AL.Great grandfather of Abbie and Katie Langford.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Walter's life at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Monday, February 25 at 9:30 AM before leaving in procession to St. Michael the Archangel Chapel at the Chelsea Soldier's Home, 91 Crest Ave., Chelsea, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 AM.Interment at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett with US Army military honors in recognition of his dedicated service during WWII and Korean War.Gifts in Walter's memory may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation, 1359 Broadway, Ste 1509, New York, NY 10018.
