Dr. Walter G. Leonard, Jr., a longtime resident and physician of Melrose, died August 1, 2007, after a period of declining health at his home surrounded by his loving family.He was 85 years old.

Dr. Leonard was born in Attleboro, on May 14, 1922, son of the late Walter G. Leonard and Hetty J. (Gwilliam) Leonard.

Dr. Leonard was raised in Norton and graduated from Norton High School, Class of 1940.He lived in both Melrose and Lynnfield for many years and moved to Saugus in 1991.He graduated from Boston University, receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943 and graduated from Boston University School of Medicine in 1946.He was a member of the Massachusetts Medical Society; Fellow of the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology; Diplomat of The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and a Medical Officer with the Ancient and Honorable Artillery of Massachusetts. He was also a longtime member of the Green Street Baptist Church and was a member of the choir for many years.

For 10 years during WWII, he served in the United States Navy as a Medical Officer.He was Staff Obstetrician at the Golden Clinic in Elkins, West Virginia for 4 years and a Chairman of the OB-GYN Department at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital for a decade.He served as President of the Staff at Melrose-Wakefield Hospital from 1979 - 1980.He also served on the staff at: Malden Hospital, Winchester Hospital, Boston Regional Medical Center, Whidden Memorial Hospital, Lynn Hospital, and Lynn Union Hospital.Since retiring from medical practice, Dr. Leonard had been teaching at Boston University School of Medicine in an integrated problem solving course.

Dr. Leonard was the devoted father of Elizabeth L. "Betty Lou" Darragh of Lynnfield, Sandra D. Sherman of Holden, Gayle L. O'Brien of Lexington, Kelley J. Vaters of Melrose, Jeffrey G. Leonard of Saugus, Donna Brammer of Melrose, Terry Burke of Methuen, and the late Walter G. Leonard III.Also survived by 11 grandchildren.
