Walter Cleveland Libby, Sr.

Mr. Walter Cleveland Libby, Sr., a Melrose resident and formerly of S. Yarmouth, passed away peacefully at Lawrence Memorial Hospital on Monday morning, October 1, 2012, at the age of 92.

Born in Portland, Maine on December 25, 1919, he was one of three children of the late Walter C. Libby, and Mary E. (Russo) Libby.

Mr. Libby graduated from Dorchester High School and served in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.On April 23, 1944 he married Ann V. Dotoli at St. Leonard's Church in Boston who he had met while stationed in the North End of Boston.They settled in Roslindale where they raised three children.

Walter was a Boston Police Officer, working the beat as a Patrolman and later as a Detective in the West End and North End.In 1954, he received a Medal of Honor from the Department for his bravery and acts of courage.He worked within the Bureau of Criminal Investigations for many years and retired after 30 years of service on the Boston Police Department.Walter also proudly sold tire repair products for Tech International as a part time job.

Following his retirement in 1976, he and Ann moved to South Yarmouth.He enjoyed the golf courses, fishing, and the beach.After his years in the Coast Guard, Walter found great joy in being near the ocean and loved walking the beach every day.He also started collecting model ships which he enjoyed remodeling.His other hobby was carpentry which he developed into a useful skill and built his daughter, Roseann, a dog house for her backyard, and a shed for behind his house at the Cape.He loved working with his hands and if he set his mind to it, he had the ability to build anything.His other interests included history, politics, travelling, talking, and was very proud of his family's heritage in Portland, Maine.

Walter was the beloved husband of the late Ann V. (Dotoli) Libby with whom he shared 59 years of marriage.Devoted father of Walter C. Libby, Jr and his wife Janet of The Villages, FL, Roseann M. Wilder of Revere, and Edward J. Libby and his wife Janet of Myrtle Beach, SC.Dear brother of Lillian Antinarelli and her husband Pat of Wilmington, and the late Ruth Rosata.Cherished grandfather of Jason Libby, Matthew Libby, Ray Richard Wilder, Denise Anne Wilder, Tara Libby, EJ Libby, and Robert Libby.Loving great-grandfather of Megan, Ryan, Gabriella, Michael, Gianna, and Cameron.Also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Walter's life for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Friday, October 5 from 4-8 PM and again on Saturday at 9:00 AM before leaving in procession to St. Mary's Church, Herbert St., Melrose, where his Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 AM.Entombment in Holy Cross Cemetery Mausoleum.
