Mr. Walter W. Storlazzi, longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully on Saturday, February 18, 2012 at Golden Living Center - The Elmhurst, at the age of 96.
Mr. Storlazzi was born on October 20, 1915 in Malden, one of 5 children of the late Pasquale and Evelina Storlazzi.Raised and educated in Malden, he graduated from Malden High School during the Depression.Without immediate work, Walter along with his friends "jumped the trains" and travelled the country on the railways.After returning home, he served in the US Army Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, proudly managing aircraft maintenance teams at several AAF bases in the South during WWII.He worked for General Electric for over 40 years as a machinist and inspector at the Riverworks plant in Lynn.
Nearing his retirement from G.E., Walter picked up the game of golf as his new favorite pastime.He soon found great joy in walking the fairways of Mt. Hood in Melrose with his wife Rose and their golfing friends.Mt. Hood became known as their second home as they spent many spring, summer, and fall days walking the course.They played in the Senior League at Mt. Hood for many years and after reaching their 80's finally began taking a cart.
After spending many years working on jet engines, he found computers to be an interesting challenge. His enthusiasm for technology grew into having a laptop for each floor of the house and developed an interest in digital cameras.Walter also enjoyed staying active outdoors with yard work, tending to his yearly vegetable garden, and taking weekly trips to Market Basket in Woburn.
Walter was the beloved husband of Rose (Serino) Storlazzi with whom he shared 70 years of marriage.Devoted father of Janet E. MacDonald and her husband John of Stoneham, and the late Robert E. Storlazzi, and Tommy Storlazzi.Dear brother of the late Carrie Seaman, Julia Poore, Edward Starr, and Mario Storlazzi.Cherished grandfather of Tracy D. MacDonald of Melrose, and the late Todd M. MacDonald.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends will honor and remember Walter by gathering for visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, February 26 from 2-6 PM and again on Monday morning where his Funeral Service will be celebrated at 10 AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose.
