Mr. Warren H. Jackson, of North Reading, founder of Jackson Industries, Inc. of Malden and former president and publisher of the Malden Evening News - Daily News Mercury, passed away on Monday morning August, 17, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was 80 years of age.
Mr. Jackson was born on July 24, 1929 in Jamaica Plain, son of the late Herman W. Jackson and Sophie (Burkhardt) Jackson. He was raised in Jamaica Plain and graduated High School from Lawrence Academy in Groton, MA. He went on to Boston University, graduating from the Public Relations and Communications School and later Northeastern University with a degree in Engineering. He also received an honorary doctorate degree in humanities from the New England School of Law.
Mr. Jackson proudly served his country in the US Army from 1952 to 1954 during the Korean War. As an instructor for the US Army Ordinance Replacement Training Center in Aberdeen, Maryland, he was honored as an outstanding instructor in Military Law, Psychological Warfare and Counter Intelligence fieldwork.
One of Mr. Jackson's business ventures included Action Jackson Amusements, a subsidiary of Jackson Industries, Inc. which he founded 1961 and grew to become one of the largest distributors of coin-operated amusement games and music equipment in the New England area. Originally started as a distributorship for materials handling equipment including backhoes and forklifts, the business traces its roots to Mr. Jackson's father, Herman W. Jackson, who established Malden Spring & Brake Corp. in 1929.The business is currently operated by a third-generation of the Jackson family.
In 1985, Mr. Jackson purchased the Malden Evening News-Medford Mercury Newspaper. He acted as president and publisher until selling the newspaper in 1995.
Throughout his life Mr. Jackson owned and partnered in the management of a diverse group of enterprises including multiple real estate holdings. He was president of Video Amusement Corp., partner in Pyramid Broadcasting WXKS-Kiss108, partner in Channel 66 WVJV-TV, partner in Middlesex Office Plaza, partner in Junction Realty Trust, director of Puritan Cooperative Bank, technical consultant for Malden Publications, Inc., officer for the Malden Hospital, partner in Technology Park Associates II, trustee of Malden Publication Realty, chairman of Industrial Finance & Leasing Corp., owner of Cape Cod's Irish Pub, C.F.O. for Abbey Carpet Co., director for Water Works Supply Corp. and President of Malden Spring & Brake Corp.
An active member of the local community in both commerce and service organizations, Mr. Jackson was a longtime member of the Malden Rotary Club where he was proudly named a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also an active member of the Wyoming Lodge AF&AM, American Legion, Malden Chamber of Commerce, Alpha Kappa Psi Business Fraternity, Loyal Order of Moose, International Material Management Society, American Public Works Association, and Aleppo Shriners. Mr. Jackson was also appointed as member of the Bench Bar News Committee of the Massachusetts Bar Association to act as a liaison between lawyers, judges and members of the press.
Mr. Jackson leaves his children, Craig W. Jackson, David W. Jackson and his wife Kimberly, and Lindsey D. Jackson; his cherished grandchildren, Kelly C. Jackson, L. Sophie Jackson and Todd Warren Jackson. Also survived by Joan Comeiro, Jane Wolf, Geraldine Jackson, and Donna Merritt-Jackson and all of their families.
A Funeral Service in honor and remembrance of Warren's life will be held at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main Street, Melrose on Friday, August 21st, 2009 at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 20th from 4 - 8 PM. Military Honors presented by the US Army will accompany the interment in Forest Dale Cemetery, Malden.
