Mr. Wilber G. "Bill" Hayward, Jr. a longtime resident of Melrose, passed away peacefully while at home on Sunday, March 2, 2014, at age 87.

Mr. Hayward was born on October 6, 1926 in Melrose, one of two sons of the late Wilber G. and Gladys (Wallace) Hayward.Raised in Everett, he graduated from Everett High School, and Burdett College in Boston.He enlisted in the United States Navy during WWII and continued his service in the Korean War.He proudly served four years, and was honorably discharged. On March 3, 1950, he married Rachael MacAskill in Boston and they settled in Melrose to raise their family of three children.

Bill worked in the accounting department for the Boston Post and later, as the Accounting Manager for the Boston Globe until his retirement in 1991.He enjoyed many years at the newspaper while also working weekends as the Supervisor for Medical Records at Boston Children's Hospital for 25 years.

A family man, Bill was stubbornly faithful to his family and never complained. He made certain that his family always came first and selflessly cared for his wife, and children.Bill was happy at home with his family on Whitman Avenue where he could relax and play with Lolly.While his children were growing, he never missed a youth baseball game or swim meet.He enjoyed participating in the Melrose YMCA programs, and was instrumental in organizing the youth swimming competitions.

Bill was a longtime member of Wyoming Lodge AF&AM, the Scottish Rite, Everett DeMolay, and was a proud member of the Aleppo Temple Shrine. A man of strong faith, Bill was a very active member of the Mystic Side Congregational Church in Everett where he also served as Treasurer for over 30 years.

Bill had simple needs in life that brought him much happiness.He loved his family, and enjoyed bowling, and golfing.Every year, he looked forward to summer trips to Bayside, Maine where they had a cottage for many years on Penobscot Bay.He loved playing many rounds of golf with his friends and family at North Port Golf Course, and enjoyed just sitting on the edge of the bay watching the sailboats race.

Bill was the beloved husband of Rachael (MacAskill) Hayward with whom he shared 64 years of marriage. Devoted father of Rev. Dr. W. Gary Hayward and his wife Susan of Barre, Scott D. Hayward and his wife Cynthia of Pocasset, and Margaret H. "Peggy" Wolley and her husband Christopher of Melrose.Dear brother of Wallace D. Hayward and his late wife Joyce of Plaistow, NH, and brother-in-law of Eunice Sanderson and her husband Roger of Canton.Cherished grandfather of Daniel Hayward, Katherine Kohl, Jonathan Hayward, James Hayward, Alyson Hayward, Scott Hayward, Jacqueline Osgood, Kerri Anne Osgood, Michael Osgood, Rachael Wolley, Megan Wolley, and the late Michael Hayward.Loving great-grandfather of Celia Hayward, Judson Hayward, Isaac Kohl, and Anastasia Kohl. Also survived by several loving nieces and nephews, and his faithful companion and pet Terrier, Lolly.

Relatives and friends will honor and remember Bill's life by gathering during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Wednesday, March 5 from 4-8PM, and again for his Funeral Service celebrated on Thursday at 11:00AM.Interment in Wyoming Cemetery, Melrose. Gifts in Bill's memory may be made to Boston Children's Hospital, 300 Longwood Ave., Boston MA 02115.
