Mr. William A. Bashford, a resident of Melrose since 1952, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at the Life Care Center of Stoneham, at the age of 98.
William was born on October 4, 1915 in Boston, one of two sons of the late William D. Bashford, and Georgianna (Mulvenney) Bashford.He was raised and educated in Dorchester.Beginning in October of 1942, William served in the US Army Air Corps during World War II. He honorably served his country in the Pacific Theater and was appointed Staff Sergeant.He received a Bronze Star for his service and was discharged in September 1944.Upon his return home, Mr. Bashford began a working career for General Electric where he was a blade processor for 35 years.
He was a member of the VFW Post #2346 in Saugus, the DAV, and the GE Retirees Club.
Mr. Bashford was a loyal, good friend who was kind to everyone he met.He enjoyed the winter months in Largo, Florida where he had made many friends, and loved to play golf.An avid gardener, he loved working in his vegetable garden to supply his family and friends with homegrown zucchini, tomatoes, and his specialty, raspberry jam.He was a known sports lover, and had a particular interest and knowledge for the Red Sox and the game of baseball as a whole.He could name nearly any ballplayer across the league and tell you about him.Known as "Pa" he taught his grandchildren how to play baseball and was always there to offer his advice.Generous with his time, he would often offer help to his neighbors and never let anyone know his age."Pa" will be lovingly remembered by his family and friends.
Mr. Bashford was the beloved husband of the late E. Margaret (Christie) Bashford with whom he shared 57 years of marriage. Devoted father of Nancy Christian of Woodstock, GA, and the late Susan Gooch and her husband Earl of Melrose.Dear brother of the late Lloyd Bashford.Cherished grandfather of Anthony Christian and his wife Kara of Canton, GA, Kyle and his wife Elizabeth of Bozeman, MT, and Eric Gooch and his wife Jessica of Boxford.Loving great-grandfather of Dylan, Alison, William, Nia, and Callum.He is also survived by his faithful pet poodle and best buddy, "Charm."
Relatives and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of William's life at Forest Hills Cemetery, 95 Forest Hills Ave., Boston where Military Honors will be presented by the US Air Force on Tuesday, May 27 at 12:45 PM.
