William E. Vargus

William E. Vargus formerly of Ipswich and Byfield, MA passed away after a brief illness on Monday, December 26, 2022 at Aberjona healthcare facility at the age of 93.

Devoted father of Allison (Paul Parella) Vargus of Melrose, Amanda Vargus of Melrose, Suzanne (Stephen) Holloman of Norristown, PA, William D. (Sue Serio) Vargus of Media, PA, and Alec Vargus of TX. Proud grandfather of William Hoepper, Nia Vargus, Jasminn Cooper, and Stephanie Holloman.

William aka Bill was born in Brockton to the late William F and Dorothea (Chapman) Vargus. Bill grew up in Quincy and proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War until 1954.

Bill was affectionately known as ‘Swoosh’ during his college years at Dean College and Tufts University where he graduated in 1952 and received a degree in Sociology and Government. He was Treasurer for Psi Delta Kappa Chapter at Tufts where he excelled at Basketball, Baseball, and Tennis.

Bill attended The University of Chicago and Graduated with a M.A. in the School of Social Services with field work in Public Welfare and Child Guidance. He worked as a social worker for many years and had a passion for helping others.

Later in life, Bill was an avid golfer, bridge, and tennis player. He even beat his children at tennis handily on his 80th birthday. He enjoyed trips to the Cape and Bermuda and traveled around New England to play 18 holes at various golf courses, winning several tournaments.

Bill was a family man with a big heart who made you feel like the most important person in the room. He was quick to tell a joke, teach a new vocabulary word, or talk about his beloved Boston sports teams. He treasured his time with his children and grandchildren who will miss him dearly. Bill's kindness, generosity, and quick wit will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Relatives and friends are invited to the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Connery Ave, Bourne (meet inside entrance) for his Graveside Service celebrated at 10:45 AM on Friday December 30th.
