Mr. William R. Vaughan of Melrose died at his home on Thursday evening, June 29, 2006.
Mr. Vaughan was born September 23, 1921 in Dorchester, MA, son of the late William Vaughan and Mildred (Elder) Vaughan.
Mr. Vaughan was a WWII US Army Veteran enlisting in the service August 10, 1942.He served in HQ Battery, 83rd Div. Artillery stationed at Camp Toombs, Toccoa, GA.He attended Cadre OCS School; University of Florida; Fort Bragg, NC; Camp Shelby, MS; and Camp Breckinridge, KY.He participated in campaigns of Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe.Memorable experiences include the hedgerows, St. Malo, Isle of Cezembre, Luxembourg, Hurtgen Forest, Bulge and the wild ride across Germany to the Elbe River.He was discharged November 14, 1945 in France.Awards include the Marksman. He was one of four brothers in the military during WWII in Pacific, North Africa, Italy and Normandy. From 1945- 1948 he worked for the U.S. Government in France and Germany as an administration head in the Transportation department.He was a member of the 83rd Infantry Division Association.He worked as a salesman for Jordan Marsh Co. for 37 years retiring in 1986.
Husband of the late Yolanda (Martino) Vaughan. Former husband of Eileen Parker of Thousand Oaks, CA. Brother of Bradford Vaughan and Peter Vaughan, both of Quincy, Charles Vaughan of Weymouth and the late Robert Vaughan,Beverly Gralton and Priscilla Simpson.Cousin of Joyce Dawkins and her children and grandchildren of Dennisport.Also survived by many nieces and nephews.
