Mr. Yeh Pan "Victor" Yuan, a longtime resident of Malden, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 16, 2016.Born in Tianjin, China on January 8, 1914 to a merchant family, he was one of six children.He was educated in private schools in Beijing and Nanjing, then attended university in Shanghai where he studied banking and finance.In the late 1930s, he moved to work in Hong Kong, where he met his wife Mui Yau "Lydia" during ping pong tournaments.They were married in Hong Kong in 1940.During Second Sino-Japanese War and the Chinese civil war, he and his young family were relocated several times.They settled in Guangzhou in the mid-1940s.He endured labor camps during various political movements in the 1950s and 60s, and was finally reunited with his family in the late 1960s.He and his wife moved to the US in 1980 to pave the way for a brighter future for their children and grandchildren.
Victor was an intellect who instilled his passion for knowledge to his family, especially his grandchildren.After his retirement in the US in the early 90s, he completed a four year English learner's program and continued to be an avid reader.He enjoyed listening to classical music and reading classical literature.He played the Erhu and harmonica.He and his three children were known for their harmonica quartet.He enjoyed playing bridge and Go with family and friends.He also taught his grandchildren and daughter-in-law mah-jong, a game they played often after family dinners.
Victor was a devoted husband to his wife of 76 years, looking after her every need until his end.He was the loving father of YanGuang Yuan and his wife MeiHua QiYuan, YanLong Yuan and his wife YanMing ZhaoYuan, YanBing Yuan and her husband XiaoBiao Huang, all of Malden, MA.He will be sorely missed by his six grandchildren, Lillian Ngu and her late husband Tung Ngu of Melrose, MA, Andy Yuan and his wife Carmen Kwan of Rego Park, NY, Annie Tang and her husband Samuel Tang of Medford, MA, Lisa Yuan So and her husband Michael So of Fort Lee, NJ, Martin Yuan and his wife Michelle Yuan of Malden, MA, and William Yuan of Malden, MA.He was a dotting great-grandfather to Vincent, Lydia, Annabelle, Olivia, Angelina, Stanley, Hanalei, and Alba.
Family and friends will gather in honor and remembrance of Victor's life during visiting hours at the Robinson Funeral Home, 809 Main St., Melrose on Sunday, April 24 from 2-6pm, and again on Monday for his Funeral Service celebrated on Monday at 10am. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Everett.
